The classic American made Bowie knife dates from around 1835. It has gone through many iterations and style changes in the last 185 years, and we will continue to see many more for years to come.
President Kennedy once sagely observed that the greatest enemy of truth is often not the lie but rather, the myth. So it is with so much in our history... including the Bowie Knife. It is said that Jim Bowie's brother, Rezin, wrote a letter in 1837 chastising those who had written wild stories about his brother and the knife he carried. He reported that Jim carried a nine inch bladed rather plain hunting knife and that he had never killed anyone with it. Perhaps we will never know the full story...
Our Defender Bowie is NOT patterned on any historical blade. It is our interpretation of a fighting Bowie Knife. It is 15" in length overall with a 10" blade. It's made of 1/4" thick 5160 steel, and is edge-quenched and oven tempered to a Rockwell hardness of around 58. It is flat ground, honed to a razor's edge and has a 5" false edge along the front of the spine near the tip. It has a double finger guard fashioned either of brass or German Silver. There is a lanyard hole through the butt end of the knife's handle and a Spanish notch in the choil area of the blade for decoration. The handle scales are either elk antler or a hardwood of your choice.
This is a brushwhacking, wood splitting behemoth of a knife suitable for a whole range of chores around camp or out on the range. Yes, in a pinch it will serve to protect you as well, but it is our hope that you are never called upon to use it for that purpose. Knowing you have it will help put your mind at ease, however, especially late in the evening when the wolves begin howling and the "painters", bears and wild boars are wandering the woods in search of their evening meal!
It's better to be prepared than to be sorry...

Here you see the sheath with a shoulder harness. This allows you to carry the knife yet easily remove it as desired to dispense with its weight. With the shoulder-carry harness the cost is $65.00
