Seth Kinman was a mountainman who claimed to have settled in California during the Gold Rush and who lived there the remainder of his life. He was known as a hunter, prospector, hotel and saloon keeper, musician and an entertainer.
His most notable accomplishment, however, seems to be as a chair maker. He made chairs for four American presidents out of grizzly bears. The story goes that each chair was covered in grizzly hides and underneath the seat was a bear's head which would come out between the sitter's feet and gnash its teeth!
Seth's knife, which ours is patterned after, is 23" long, a short sword really, and it had the words "Grizzly Dissector" engraved in cursive script on the blade. That knife is still around today, though I've never seen it. Our Kinman knife is a smaller version of his knife, being 15" long with a 10" blade. We've"prettied it up" a bit with a Spanish notch in front of the finger guard, a great place to safely rest your index finger. His knife had a bird's head handle which we've replaced on ours with a coffin style handle. The finger guard is the same style, as is the look of the blade itself. As with all of our large knives, the blade is fashioned from 5160 alloy steel, and it is hardened and tempered accordingly. This is a fine knife and will serve you well for many years to come!
The price of a standard Kinman Knife with the sheath shown is $400.00
With our regular Bowie sheath, the price will be $445.00
A shoulder harness can be added for an additional $20.00
Shipping in the US will be $20.00
This version of the Kinman knife is dressed up to say the least. It has a "two-toned" handle, part of it covered with elk scales and the remainder in bone with a brass spacer in between them. There is some very minimal file work along the spine, similar to the type of work seen on early Bowie knives, and it has a 4" false edge. This knife possesses a German silver butt cap and finger guard with a blade finish that makes it appear to be quite old yet not pitted or deteriorated. The sheath is snake skin with a keeper strap and a shoulder harness for ease of carry. The sheath may be work on the belt, however, by simply removing the harness. This is a fine example of distinctive knife and would look impressive in any mountainman's kit!
The price of this knife with the pictured sheath is $750.00
