Squire Boone lived a life equally as exciting and daunting as that of his ten year older brother, Daniel. They were both active explorers and woodsmen, but Squire was additionally a talented gunsmith, blacksmith, Baptist preacher and farmer. Of the first eight white men who ventured into the “dark and bloody ground”, as Kentucky was known in the 1770’s, only two came out alive – Daniel and Squire. It is said that Squire very meticulously made his brother’s favorite gun, ‘Tick Licker’, as a gift for him, and that rifle contributed mightily to Daniel’s fame as a marksman.
Sometime, probably in the first decade of the 1800’s, Squire crafted his pipe hawk and at some point traded it to his brother-in-law, Benjamin Van Cleve, for a cow. Van Cleve's son, William, carried it to New Orleans during the War of 1812. The pipe-tomahawk was a powerful symbol on the frontier, and whether Boone’s was used as a weapon or as a ceremonial object of friendship is not known.
We decided to make our Boone hawk as a hammer poll axe rather than a pipe-tomahawk. The hawk head is 6"in length with a cutting edge of a full 3”. The original had a very thin blade, being used primarily as a weapon of war and a ceremonial pipe of peace, both as needed. Ours also has a thin blade, but there is enough of a wedge shape in it to make an excellent tool. The body of the hawk is forged from 1020 mild steel, and the W-1 steel edge has been fire-welded to it and hardened and tempered accordingly. Like the original, the haft is a little over 15” long, crisscrossed with fire branding, and the whole axe has been aged to appear as if it has been around for generations. Make no mistake, however… this is a “using axe”, and it will give you the same fine service for which our other steel products are known.
"My God my life has much befriended, I’ll praise Him til my days are ended"

This hawk is patterned after a style of axe used by the merovingians more than twelve hundred years ago. The head is highly polished, but if kept dry and lightly oiled it will retain that finish for a a surprisingly long time. The handle is "pyro-engraved" with ancient symbols, as axes sometimes were in those days. It comes with a double loop to be worn on a belt. there is, however, no edge protector.
This hatchet is 4 3/4" in length, has a 3" cutting edge, and the handle in it is a bit over 13" long. it is, of course, hardened and tempered.
